“For the last couple of years I have been considering buying a property to retire in, either in Spain or in Portugal. Some of the things that I have read about estate agents, particularly in Spain, really worry me. Should I be nervous about finding an agent in Portugal? How will I know whether they have my best interests at heart?”

Portugal is a strict place to work for estate agents. There are constant checks to make sure they are sticking to the rules and working honestly. In addition, agents have to work hard to get listings because there is just so much competition. It is only in their best interests to work with the best, most trustworthy people, and to recommend them to you. If they don’t stick to these strict conditions, they will lose their licences and this is not something that they want to risk!

When buying in Portugal, you have to put a lot of trust in your estate agent. This is because they are the person who is going to listen to your needs and help you find the property and life that you are seeking here. They are experienced, individuals who are committed to helping you find the right property for you!

When you are buying property in the Algarve, it is a lot different from buying property in your home country. At home, you know the area and can pop into any estate agents office, have a look at the properties displayed on the wall and decide to see it straight away because you know that area or that street and would be happy to live there. Over here – you don’t have this local knowledge. Fortunately, your estate agent does.

They will take note of your budget and the rough area that you want to be in but will then have to dig much deeper to work out what it is that you really need. Do you need to be near amenities? Is it essential that you are close to a doctor or a hospital? You may have your heart set on a particular area – somewhere that seems perfect when you are on holiday - but if you were to actually live there you could find problems, such as infrequent public transport or poor road access. You may well overlook a steep climb down to the beach when you are on holiday, but if you had to do that every day, it would become a chore. It is these things that you may not have considered that your agent will be able to iron out for you.

Having been a estate agent myself, and knowing the vast majority of agents in the area, I know first hand how hard they work to help you buy successfully. It pays to go off recommendations and I can put you in touch with these agents myself.
