Castelo Branco
The city is the commercial and administrative centre of Beira Baixa, and is still surrounded by the restored walls of the 16th century castle.

Guarda
This town was originally founded in 1197 as a fortified border town designed to protect the Portuguese from successive waves of invading Spanish forces. The area around Guarda is dotted with the remains of the castles that were part of the defence systems. Three nearby smaller towns, Transcoso, Almeida and Castelo Rodrigo, were also once fortified villages – in fact to enter Almeida, you must still cross the narrow ancient bridge and through a tunnel onto the ramparts.
